This webOS Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes how Team of Monkeys ("we," "us," or "our"), a division of STOM Research, treats information in connection with your use of our applications for LG webOS televisions ("Apps"). Through our Apps we offer free games and always-on TV Channels, delivered directly to your television at no cost to you. We are committed to transparency and to protecting the privacy of every viewer who chooses to install one of our Apps. Please read this Policy carefully to understand our practices regarding information and how we treat it.
Our webOS Apps are free entertainment products: games you can play instantly with the Magic Remote or the D-pad, and broadcast-style TV Channels you can tune into and watch around the clock. They are designed to be enjoyed the moment they are launched. There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to subscribe to, and nothing to pay. We build them the same way we build everything at Team of Monkeys: fun first, friction never.
We formally state, without qualification, that no information from LG or from the webOS platform is collected by us at any point. Our Apps do not read, request, harvest, transmit, or retain any information originating from your LG television or from the webOS operating system. This includes, without limitation: LG account information, LG Content Store account details, device serial numbers, TV model or firmware identifiers, MAC or IP addresses, advertising identifiers, viewing history, channel or tuner data, ACR (automatic content recognition) data, voice or microphone input, camera input, location data, network names, installed-app inventories, system logs, and any other platform-level signal that webOS may make available to applications. We do not call platform services for the purpose of gathering such data, and we do not maintain any pipeline, endpoint, or database that would receive it. There is no collection at any point: not at install, not at launch, not during playback, not in the background, and not at exit.
Our Apps do not require a login of any kind. We do not maintain user accounts, we do not require registration, and we do not need, collect, retain, store, or hold any user data whatsoever. Our products simply do not need your data to function, and a product that does not need your data has no business taking it. Any small amount of state that may be kept locally on the television for the sole purpose of providing app functionality (for example, remembering a volume preference or which channel you last tuned to) remains on your device, under your control, and is never transmitted to us. Uninstalling an App removes that local state with it.
All advertising presented in our webOS Apps consists of affiliate advertisements. An affiliate advertisement is a plain, static promotion for a product or service for which we may receive a commission or a portion of the sale if a viewer independently chooses to make a purchase. Every viewer sees the same affiliate ads. There is no targeting, no personalization, no segmentation, no audience matching, no retargeting, and no profile of you of any kind, because we hold no information about you from which such a thing could be constructed. The ads that appear on your television are the same ads that appear on every other television running that App at that time.
We do not use programmatic advertising or anything like it. Our Apps contain no real-time ad bidding, no behavioral or interest-based ad targeting, no advertising SDKs that profile viewers, no tracking pixels, and no third-party ad networks that follow you across services. The advertising ecosystem that trades on user data is precisely the ecosystem we have chosen to stay out of. The only commercial content you will ever encounter in our webOS Apps is the plain, honest affiliate advertisement described here.
Our monetization model is based on the content being watched, not on the person watching it. Each of our channels is built around a specific and well-defined subject, and each subject naturally draws a niche audience that is known to be interested in, and to buy, a particular category of product. We select affiliate advertisements to match the content of the channel, and only the content of the channel. In other words, the relevance of an ad is derived from what is on the screen, never from who is in the room. This is contextual by construction: the channel already tells us what the ad should be about, so we have no need to learn anything about you, and we do not.
Because relevance comes from the content rather than from surveillance, this model lets us keep every App completely free, pay for the bandwidth and production that keeps the channels running, and still never touch a single piece of viewer information. It is, in our view, the honest version of ad-supported television: the show picks the ad, and the viewer picks the moment.
Advertising in our webOS Apps lives in a pull-up menu. The affiliate ads are not pushed at you, not overlaid on the picture, and not inserted into the programming. They sit in a menu that you, the viewer, choose to pull up when and if you want to see what is on offer. If you never open the menu, you never see an ad. If you are curious, you open it, browse at your own pace, and close it again. Shopping is a decision you make deliberately, on your own schedule, and not a decision that is made for you.
The live video feed is never disrupted. We do not run pre-roll ads, mid-roll ads, post-roll ads, or ad breaks of any kind. We do not pause, mute, dim, cover, or interrupt the programming to show a commercial. Opening the pull-up menu does not stop the show, and closing it does not require you to catch up. The channel keeps playing, uninterrupted, for as long as you choose to leave it on. An always-on channel that stops to sell you something is no longer an always-on channel, and we will not ship one.
If you contact us with a complaint, question, or support request (for example, at support@teamofmonkeys.com), the email you send us is the only information of yours we will ever possess. We use it solely to resolve your issue. Once the issue is solved, we delete the complaint and the associated correspondence. We do not archive support tickets, build contact databases, or use support correspondence for marketing of any kind. You reach out, we fix it, and the record disappears.
Our goal is viewer happiness, and part of viewer happiness is letting viewers keep their privacy. We believe the two are inseparable. An app that quietly harvests data from the people it claims to entertain is not making anyone happy; it is making them a product. We would rather earn a modest commission when you genuinely choose to open the pull-up menu and follow an affiliate link than earn anything at all from information about you. By not collecting or retaining any information, we also eliminate our exposure to data breaches, reduce regulatory risk, and remove any temptation to treat our viewers as an asset to be mined. We encourage you to use our Apps with the confidence that we do not seek to profit from or exploit your information, today or ever.
Our Apps are distributed through the LG Content Store, and your download and use of any App through that store is also subject to LG Electronics' own terms and privacy practices, which we do not control and for which we are not responsible. Any information LG itself may collect through your television, your LG account, or the platform is governed by LG's policies, not by ours. Likewise, if you follow an affiliate link from the pull-up menu to a third-party merchant, the privacy practices of that destination are governed by its own policy. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you choose to visit. We do not attach viewer-identifying information to any such interaction, and we do not retain records of such interactions.
Our Apps are not directed at children under the age of 13 (or such higher age as may apply in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because we do not collect or retain any information as stated in this Policy, we also do not retain information from children. If you believe that a child has provided information to us in connection with one of our Apps, please contact us at support@teamofmonkeys.com and we will ensure that no such information is stored by us.
Because we do not collect or retain viewer information on our systems, the risk of loss, misuse, or unauthorized access to your personal data in our possession is minimized. We do not maintain viewer databases that could be subject to breach. Any state that exists only on your television remains under your control and is subject to your device's security settings and LG's platform policies. We recommend that you keep your television's firmware updated and use appropriate security measures to protect your home network.
Because we do not retain information about you, there is no personal data held by us that you would need to access, correct, delete, or port. If you have questions about this Policy or our practices, you may contact us at support@teamofmonkeys.com. If you are located in a jurisdiction that grants you specific rights regarding personal data (such as the European Economic Area or California), please note that our policy of not retaining any information means that we have no data to disclose, correct, or delete in response to such requests, which is consistent with our commitment to your privacy. You may uninstall any of our Apps at any time through your television's app management screen; uninstalling removes the App and any locally stored settings with it.
